Gambling in the United Kingdom

Like every country Gambling is legal, UK is also permitted to run the gambling within the United Kingdom. This activity is regulated by the Gambling Commission on behalf of the Govt's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) under the Gambling Act 2005. This Act of Parliament considerably updated the UK's gambling laws, which incorporated the introduction of a new structure of protections for children and vulnerable adults, as well as bringing the burgeoning internet poker gaming sector within British regulation for the first time. This act cemented the way for larger resort style casinos to be built, although in a controlled manner with one being built every few years until the act is fully implemented.

Some Gambling forms are operating in UK like everywhere.  The main forms are Bingo and UK casinos, Sports gambling, Lottery and scratch cards.

Bingo

It has documented that the game of internet bingo was became popular in the military forces in the 2nd World War. This was brought back to Britain after the end of the war. Later it rapidly popularized among the common man. The betting and gaming Act was introduced in UK on 1960.  The Act allowed commercial bingo halls can be opened. Such halls known as clubs and allowed the public to become a member and provided they were established as members clubs.  Such clubs can charge membership fees and other charges rather than entry fees.

Casinos

Some clubs also known as casinos. These also required license from the Gaming Board of Great Britain. Like Bingo the casinos are also allowed members to become the part of casino play. The number of gaming machines in casinos was limited to10 by the licensing authority. This is very difficult for some casinos due to high rush. Later the law has liberalized.  Later some “Super casinos” were established. Various cities applied to open one of these so-called "super casinos“. In January 2007, Manchester was announced as the first city location of the first “super-casino”.   The Casino gaming machines have two categories depending upon the stakes and payouts. The first category is limited to casinos, bingo halls and clubs. The second category is later also permitted in pubs, cafes, arcades, and other communal halls.

Sports Gambling

It has a long history in the UK. There is a big market in the UK alone for gambling on competitive sports at bookmakers, particularly for horse, greyhound racing and association football.

Lottery

The “National Lottery” is running under Govt. License since 1993 in UK.  A statute of 1698 provided that in England lotteries were by default illegal unless and until it is specifically authorized by statute. There could be no big national lottery until the Government established in the Govt’s own license

Scratch cards

This is very popular form of gambling in the UK, because of its easy availability in every corner and cheapest cost.  This is a small piece of card where an area has been covered by a substance that cannot be seen through, but can be scratched off. Under this area are concealed the items/pictures that must be 'seen', if it scratched in order to win.
